A detached garage with a vehicle lift is not just a standard garage with taller doors. The lift can require more clear height, stronger slab design, different framing, larger doors, and a roof shape that still complies with municipal height rules.
Calgary height limits are a common constraint
Calgary Land Use Bylaw 1P2007 limits accessory residential building height to 4.6 metres measured from the finished floor, 3.0 metres at the eaveline, and one storey. A lift can quickly run into those limits if the design uses tall walls, a steep roof, attic storage, or a high overhead door.
Edmonton accessory building height is also limited
Edmonton Zoning Bylaw 20001 Section 5.10 lists a maximum height of 4.3 metres for accessory buildings in residential zones unless another rule applies. That can make lift planning difficult if the homeowner expects room for a raised vehicle plus roof structure above.
County and custom garages may need engineering coordination
In Rocky View County, Mountain View County, and other rural municipalities, larger workshops and lift-ready garages often need a custom review. Long spans, tall walls, slab thickness, point loads, and foundation design may require engineering or manufacturer information.
