Do I need a Building Permit?

In a word – yes. Alberta garages are considered Accessory Residential Buildings, and require a building permit to be issued before construction begins. Your permit protects both you and others that may purchase your property in the future by involving the city in the construction process. The city will review your garage blueprints and perform inspections to ensure that all building code requirements are being met and that the garage is safe for use.

How Big Do You Want to Build?

In most cases, your new garage is likely to be 20×20, 22×22, 24×24, or somewhere in between. If you’re planning to build a garage that measures 592 square feet or under, garagepermits.ca has created a simple flat rate package with fast turnaround to help keep your building permit cost down.

The City of Calgary’s current fee for garage permit applications is $332 plus a Safety Codes Council fee of 4% for a total of $345.28. This fee is not included in our $397 garage blueprint package.

Here's what's included:

An aerial floorplan of your proposed garage complete with door and window placements, slab and wall details, and information on exterior finishes
Elevations showing all sides of your garage with information about the roof slope, eave height, and overall building height
Detailed cross sections showing the roof truss spacing and configuration, wall height, and slab thickness
An aerial site plan of your property showing where the garage will sit in relation to your home, the property lines, building setbacks, and any registered right-of-ways
Drawing revisions to ensure that your garage blueprint will be designed exactly the way you want it

This blueprint package is designed to meet all of the bylaws, regulations, and building code requirements necessary for a quick building permit approval.
